System Owner Electric and Hybrid Propulsion

The workboats Division represents one of the four ship-newbuild domains of Damen Shipyards, alongside Offshore & Specialized Vessels, Yachting and Naval. Workboats focuses on designing, engineering, building and commissioning of Workboats, such as High Speed Craft, Fast Ferries, Stationary Dredgers and Tugs.

The development of electrification within the Shipbuilding industry is increasing fast. Damen Workboats wants to be in the forefront of these developments and is constantly looking for new ways to develop, design and implement innovative electrical systems. In order to achieve our goals we are looking for a System Owner for the system platform team “Electric and Hybrid Propulsion” in the Technology Management department.

The Technology Management department of the division Workboats is responsible for technology development and standardization of the ship’s systems portfolio based on modular and scalable solutions.

A system platform team is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for a so called system platform, The system platform team takes care of the development, standardization and maintenance of the entire (standard) system during its full life cycle. For technical content, supply chain, production and quality control, knowledge management and documentation for in service support.

The system owner Electric & Hybrid propulsion leads the system platform team and is accountable for the electrification of the propulsion system of the complete Workboats product portfolio.

Based on the Workboats ambitions on strategic themes, sustainability, digitalization and operational excellence, the System Owner sets a clear vision for the system platform(s), taking into account the business requirements, the future Damen Workboats ship portfolio, cooperation with suppliers, technology, market needs and opportunities. The system owner has to ensure that the right systems are available on time, enabling successful integration in our ships, with technology developed, the supply chain efficiently organized, knowledge embedded in the organization, asset management in place and the Damen Services organization ready to assist a happy customer to be successful in their operation. Moreover the System Owner will gather feedback from our customer’s experience as an important input for new system developments.

So generally the System Owner takes responsibility of “the system” through all phases of its lifecycle.

The System Owner will be reporting to the manager of the Technology Management department.

In this exciting role you will be accountable for:

• Managing the development of modular and scalable system families, variants and options covering the needs of the complete Damen Workboats portfolio;
• Driving the development for a range of sub-systems, like power management systems (PMS), energy management systems (EMS), propulsion control and monitoring systems as part of the electric and hybrid propulsion system solutions;
• Managing the definition of the system configuration including the selection of sub-systems and components in close dialogue with the ship type portfolio owners;
• The definition of the long and shorter term Technology Development roadmap and agenda; Ensuring that the development of knowledge and technology is aligned with the need for electrification of the ship propulsion systems coming from the market as defined by the product portfolio owners;
• Monitoring the Freeze and Release agenda for the system portfolio
• Being the focal point of contact for the development and implementation of the system platform throughout the organization;
• Setting priorities in the system platform team in order to enable new development as well as supporting the actual implementation of solutions;
• Approving the selection of key suppliers in close cooperation with Damen Category Management and ship type development teams;
• Heading the multi-disciplinary system platform team;
• Implementing the multi-disciplinary approach enabling the end to end responsibility for the system platform, from development till end of life;
• Initiating the collaboration with key suppliers in the development of the system platform.

You have a :

• Academic level
• Background in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering or another relevant technical study which involves integration of complex systems;
• Experience with the development and integration of (electrical) propulsion systems, preferably in shipbuilding;
• Experience with the application of Systems Engineering principles;
• Five to ten years of relevant work experience, preferably in the shipbuilding industry;
• The ability to translate high level market and business requirements into technology and system development needs;
• The ability to prioritize effectively;
• Good people and communication skills;
• Excellent communication skills in English, Dutch is a plus.
