Resident Engineer

Definition and background information

  • Performance of preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Responsible for fully understanding the technical installation
  • 2 – 5 years experience and higher technical education

Key Responsibility
  • The Resident Engineer is permanently based on the customer site to provide service support and to keep the installation technically up to date and running
  • Core tasks and measurable indicators of individual performance

  • Keep the customer’s automated warehouse and transport system technically up to date and running
  • Customer Satisfaction (customer feedback is main input into manager appraisal)
  • Take care of preventative and corrective maintenance of the central distribution center
  • Number of major disturbances
  • Monitor and correct the system performance daily
  • Time to fix and margin for Swisslog for all-in contract  Solve disturbances and user problems of mechanical, electrical and automation kind (PLC & IT) 
  • Plan and realize inspections, spare part management and improvements for the plant
  • Maintain site stocks, company tools, manuals and all other company property in good and clean order
  • Know and practice company’s procedures
  • Ensure that the company’s and customer’s safety regulations are followed at all times and report any anomalies immediately

    Secondary tasks
    • Primary face to customer representing Swisslog
    • Act as the interface between end customer and various Swisslog departments and external suppliers and communicate effectively with all parties
    • Co-ordinate with people from Swisslog if problems arise
    • Deal promptly with customer’s enquiries, complaints or problems and refer immediately to higher authority if problems arise that cannot be dealt with
    • Promote and sell Swisslog customer support services and escalate enquiries to the appropriate manager
    • Support and train users of the installation

Educational / Professional Qualifications
  • Higher education in electrical / mechanical / automation engineering
  • Good level of health and fitness and to be able to work safely at height
  • Good English skills

  • Experience in the same type of work within similar systems
  • PC and MS office literate

Necessary Experience
  • 2 – 5 years as an service technician or technical skills in electrical, instrumental or similar competence

  • Several years of working experience in an automated industrial or automated material handling environment

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Broad knowledge in mechanics, hydraulics, electrics/electronics and automation systems (PLC & IT) Knowledge of software controlled logistic systems and understanding of daily operational problems in a distribution centre
  • Experience in PLC systems S7 & PC (server client, RF) systems
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency with normal range on and and power tools
  • Result oriented
  • Self starter mentality and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Good customer service skills including being able to communicate at all levels
  • Ability to adapt to the customer’s company culture and working environment as well as adhering to Swisslog standards
  • Willingness to take stand-by shifts and work outside normal working hours

  • Several years of working experience in an automated industrial or automated material handling environment
  • Good people management skills
